Our mission is to eradicate preventable medical errors, with our focus being on preventable medication errors, which accounts for 43% of those mistakes.

Together we can make our nation’s world-renowned medical facilities safer for everyone, beginning with our babies and children.

Since the Foundation began in August 2009, after the passage of Emily’s Law in the state of Ohio, this very important objective has been the full-time focus of Chris Jerry; increasing public awareness of key patient safety related issues and identifying technologies and best practices proven to minimize the “human error” component of medicine. Through our ongoing efforts, the Emily Jerry Foundation is now expanding in 2016, to work even harder to make a difference and save lives.

The Emily Jerry Foundation Objectives

• To eradicate preventable medical medical errors, which are now the third leading cause of death in the United States, claiming over 440,000 lives every year (reference Dr. John James sentinel study “A New Evidence-based Estimate of Patient Harms Associated with Hospital Care” (September 2013 – Volume 9 – Issue 3 – p 122–128).

• To create an awareness of the prevalence and alarming rate of medication errors, medical procedure mistakes and lack of reporting by hospitals, medical caregivers and healthcare providers.• To create an extensive and collaborative education program to benefit the entire healthcare community, government agencies, medical schools and pharmacy, professional organizations and general public.

• Help support, endorse and work in a collaborative spirit with medical device manufacturers to assure the production and placement of the technologies that provide needed safeguards.

• Work with existing organizations dedicated to enhanced medical safety systems to promote awareness, education, legislation, etc.

• Lobby to establish state and federal legislation that assures strict controls in professional training, education, testing and professional code of ethics for professionals engaged in medicine compounding, and to assure optimum medical safety delivery for all.

• Work for mandated error reporting systems within the entire healthcare industry where errors are reviewed, scrutinized and solutions shared and implemented.

• Create and implement a supportive counseling and therapeutic movement to assist those victimized and traumatized by medical error.

• Develop collaborations with select organizations devoted to grief counseling.

• Create a counseling program for medical practitioners responsible for medical mistakes.

• Create a collaborative association with medical and pharmaceutical professional organizations.

This is a new beginning:

Up until 2016, for the past 7 years, covering the expenses of the Foundation depended entirely on Chris Jerry. He funded the Foundation activities from a very modest monthly annuity (which was created from the settlement involving Emily’s death) along with income from speaking engagements. So in this way, he was able to carry on the cause, building awareness and inspiring positive change.

But in June, 2016, after meeting and consulting with others, and after it became even more apparent that the path to change was much more difficult than originally imagined, reality set in (1). It was realized that in order to really inspire positive positive change and make a difference, and achieve the mission of eradicating preventable medical errors, the Foundation would need to really ramp up. So now, with a budget in place and realistic and achievable goals set with the help of a few very smart people, the Foundation has been set up on a new path of focusing on its initiatives to help bring about these vital changes badly needed in healthcare.
