Pharmacy Tech Scholarship
Tragically, preventable medical errors are the third leading cause of death in America today, and medication errors, like the one that claimed the life of two year old Emily Jerry in 2006, are the highest percentage of this astounding loss of life (approximately 43%). There is not a pharmacy in the United States that could safely dispense medications without having well-trained, competent pharmacy technicians on their team, who make the decision to become a pharmacy technician as a serious career choice. The pharmacy, especially the clinical pharmacy, operates in the background, typically in the basements of our nation’s world renowned healthcare facilities. Many people are completely unaware of how the overall “scope of practice” and the vital responsibilities for pharmacy technicians have expanded in recent decades. A great example of this, is the fact that in all of our nation’s medical facilities, pharmacy technicians, are responsible for compounding virtually all intravenous (IV) medications under the supervision of registered pharmacists. These IV medications and oncology preparations go directly into patient’s circulatory systems, so it is always imperative that they are compounded (mixed) with complete and total accuracy.
With these thoughts in mind, the Foundation has created an initiative to actively raise funds to support the EJF Pharmacy Technician Scholarship, for those that are seriously considering a career as a clinical pharmacy technician. Through your generous charitable gifts to the Emily Jerry Foundation, we will be providing scholarships to as many students as possible, to help cover their cost of tuition to accredited pharmacy technician schools around the United States. In addition, for those pharmacy technician students who are awarded an EJF Pharmacy Technician Scholarship, and live in a state that require PTCB certification exam, the Foundation will also pay for their cost in taking this very important exam, upon completion of their training.
Becoming a pharmacy technician can be not only rewarding , but is a vital component of safe pharmacy practice which needs to be raised up.
