Patient Safety Express
The Emily Jerry Foundation’s “Patient Safety Express” Educational Program
On the Road to Saving 440,000 Lives a Year!
The plan is simple. Once we raise the funds necessary to lease a coach tour bus, similar to the one pictured, and the scheduling and staffing is in place, the bus will hit the road for as long as it continues to be funded.
According to the American Hospital Association (AHA), there are nearly 6,000 registered hospitals in the United States today. We know it’s a completely unrealistic goal to expect to book speaking engagements at each and every one of these facilities, so the “Patient Safety Express” with its integrated on-board educational program will be the most effective and efficient way to reach as many of these hospitals as possible in the least amount of time.
We estimate that expenses keeping the Patient Safety Express on the road will be between $150,000 and $175,000 (or $5,500 a day, 20% of which covers the administrative costs). It will be manned in a large part by volunteers, which will also determine where the bus travels based on where the next group of volunteers will be picked up. Chris and other Foundation employees will also ride along periodically, going to as many hospitals and patient safety functions around the country as humanly possible.
The Patient Safety Express will make one to three stops a day, depending on the facility and what’s been planned, and who’s speaking that day. The engagements and patient safety events per month will determine much of the schedule, which will do its own planning by taking the Foundation’s office essentially on the road, which is possible in our modern technological world today. Some may meet up with the bus via commercial airlines, but with the Patient Safety Express constantly on the move, visiting five to ten hospitals per week is a very realistic goal. Subsequently, we believe we can effectively make a direct impact in this manner to over 500 hospitals and functions per year!
The Patient Safety Express will to continue to convey our vital message to as many practicing clinicians and healthcare administrators around the country, as quickly and effectively, as possible.
